What do i do about about a virus that causes my laptop to shutdown every time i open the cd drive?

Q: a virus or not? i just dont know i run avast but it doesnt find anything what do i do funny thing screw was loose and the drive wasnt connected completly and must have shorted and cause pc to shutdown to not damage it so my pc is okay and i just have to push the drive back in as in frustration i pulled it too hard which led to me finding out that it came way out and wasnt connected

A: To me, it sounds like you have a short in your wiring. No virus can instantly shut down a computer the second you hit a button. If the computer starts to shutdown (in the standard process), then you may have a virus. However, my guess is that the drive is damaged in some way, and the computer shutsdown as a failsafe to prevent damage to it. Test: Start the computer and go into the BIOS (normally by hitting like F12 during the bootup sequence). Once inside, press the eject button on the drive. If the computer shuts down then, you know it is a hardware problem because a virus will not be running in the BIOS stage of the computer's startup. Remember, a virus is a program. Any program can be found and halted.
