Q: I am getting a PC laptop for my birthday in a couple weeks and am looking for something really fast. And under 900 dollars. Please don't suggest the macbook because I can't afford it. Thanks!
A: 900 bucks is a lot of money! Computers these days Range from 400-4,000 dollars! Now of course you get totally different machines when you pay 400 or 4,000. For most people a computer in the 600-1200 dollar range does a great job. For more specific needs such as graphic design, gaming, or video editing you are going to need a more powerful machine. if you are just planning on using it for a DVD player, and something to play solitaire on you can easily get a 400$ machine. Most people use their computer for internet, e-mail, listening to music, watching movies, school work, and tons of multitasking. The Specs on a computer are easy to break down. RAM allows you to have more programs open at once (multitasking), the hard drive allows you to store data (pics, docs, movies, programs), and the processor is what does all the computing, the brains of the operation if you will. 2-3 Gigs of ram is good for multitasking, 1 gig is too little for vista to run smoothly. Hard drives generally range from 80-320 Gigs. Anything 160 gigs and above is huge, and great for tons of storage. The processor is also an easy choice. There are two brands, intel and AMD. Both are really good these days when it comes to speed, but intel generally tends to get better battery life, runs cooler, and when you look at the new ones they are generally quicker. Make sure you get a Core 2 Duo, that's intel's current line. For the computer itself you should be able to get away with spending 599-799 but make sure to budget for other stuff. Antivirus software is crucial, either go with Kaspersky Internet Security or Webroot Spysweeper with Antivirus. They are both fantastic programs when it comes down to protecting your computer. Speaking of protection its a good idea to consider getting a service plan with your computer, they cover accidental damage, parts, labor, diagnosis, surges, and at some you even get battery replacement. The manufacturer warranty will only cover you for manufacturer defects, which totally sucks (ive been there) Personally I'm a bit bias, I work at best buy as an apple computer sales associate. Apple computers do have alot of advantages, lots of included software, no need to antivirus software, and incredibly designed hardware. Plus if you are a student they give you a discount! If i were you I would head over to best buy and just check out the possibilities, but make sure you get a great sales associate, someone who has your best interests in mind. If you live in Minnesota head to the Eagan store :) Good luck Computer shopping, Have fun! P.S make sure you get a computer on sale, you can save 100-200 dollars instantly that way, which pays for most other things that you will need. Have a great day!
