Q: Where to get (free) downloads?
A: No need for extra soft. Connect the new monitor to the laptop. Right click on the desktop, Properties, Settings, 1 is the laptop monitor, 2 is the one - click on it, select the resolution (the native one of the monitor), make sure Use this... is unticked, tick Extend my... , Apply, OK.
