Sound is coming out of the laptops speakers even when I plug in my earphones?

Q: I have a HP Pavilion dv6696nr Notebook Laptop. I just recently bought it a month or 2 ago. For some reason when I plug in my earphones into the laptop, sound still comes from the laptop speakers, and not the earphones problem. I know it's not the earphones, because I used several different earphones that were new, and the same thing happened. I plugged the earphones into the correct plug space, and I made sure it was fully in. I'm pretty sure there's nothing wrong with the sound system, or sound card. Whenever I plug in the earphones, the sound comes from the laptop speaker, not the earphones. I don't hear anything from the earphones. So what do I do? Please help me fix this. I think I probably changed the settings or something. I looked at other peoples questions on here that were the same. The people that answered told them some directions to get to the settings to check on a box under the sound settings. But my computer's newer so I don't know where to go to change the settings. I looked through the control panel, and sound devices. But I couldn't figure it out. Please don't just say go to the Control Panal, then the sound settings, and then check on the 'turn off speakers' or something like that. Unless you have the same laptop, or have experience with the same one, then don't say anything along the lines of that. Anyways please help! - I appreciate any replies of answers to this!
