Q: I received an iBook G3 600 and the cd rom drive did not work. I purchased an external drive that it will boot to. Now when I try to boot to os X to install I get a red circle with a line through it and when I boot to os 9 cd it freezes when I initialize the HDD. I have replaced the hard drive. Any suggestions would be very helpful. I have tried to install OS 10.1 and 10.3 with each booting to a blue screen with the circle at the bottom. And then in the middle of the screen I get a red circle with a line through it and the computer freezes. Am I just too impatient and thinking that it is frozen when it is not??
A: What version of OSX are you using because I don't think any of the later versions even support G3 chips. For the other issue: When you put the disc in the drive you hold down the "option" key, and then when the start up selection box appears you then select the OS9 CD to boot from, correct? After that it could very well take 10 to 15 minutes to actually initialize and get you to the install, during which time you may think it has frozen but it hasn't.
