A: an apple modem works like any other modem- you connect to the internet with it. Now, if you're talking about a wireless modem, such as the Airport Express, that's different. You plug the internet cable from the wall into the Express and plug the express into a wall outlet. Now your internet is broadcast wirelessly, thus giving your "wi-fi". If you don't want wireless internet, you plug the internet cable from the wall into your computer to get internet access. The internet has to be DSL or Cable, because the old phone line, or 56k (also known as dial-up) is not compatible with the Apple modem. You need to purchase a seperate modem to connect to the slow, antiquated 56k, which is available on their website.
