Computer shuts down after unpulling from the wall? Normal???

Q: I was working on some homework and decided to take my laptop to my room ... so I unplug it from the wall while it was still on ... instead of staying ... it shuts down ... erasing the lectures that I downloaded ... that took hours ... so should I be concerned or is there a technique that I not aware of because this has happened four or fives times It is fully charged ... it shut off as soon I pulled the plug ... omg! I hope its not my battery! I defrag, disk cleanup, and run scans regularly It happens rarely ... last time was around finals ... which was May ... I just talked to my brother and he said that you have the unplug from the computer first then unplug from the wall or you shock your computer ... opinions ... btw thanks for the all the responses so far but how much does a battery usually cost??? Making sure that I understand correctly ... I might to get a new external battery because the lifespan runs an average of 2-3 years ... is my internal battery okay???

A: I agree that your battery is probably going bad. Shutting down immediately like that is a good indication. Regarding pulling the plug from the wall vs from the laptop; There is no valid documentation to support that. I have had laptops since they came out and have done contract work for HP, Dell, Compaq using their laptops. It is an old wives tale, urban legend, whatever. Batteries last 2-3 years max. By then your laptop has outgrown your need usually. If not you can find good prices on eBay usually.
