Q: I am upgrading an emachine t3958 and it needs more ram. I am looking for a 1gb stick of ram. The most i can spend on it is about $30.00. I cant seem to find 1gb of ram that cheap for this computer. All the sites want 50 or $60 for it. So if someone could give me a link to a site that has 1GB DDR333 PC2700, 184p DIMM ram for under $30.00 that would be great. :) Also will it be ok for it to run with the 512mb module that came with it??
A: First of all, yes, that PC uses the old DDR1 standard, which is a shame, because those modules are now relatively costly. Thankfully, Newegg actually still has them fairly cheap. You can get a 1GB DDR2-400 module for 28$ shipped; a good deal on decent-quality RAM. Yes, it's generic, but brand name RAM also uses generic Taiwanese chips, they all do. As for the speed, faster RAM will just drop down to 333MHZ with no issues. In fact it may run more reliably, as it's under less stress. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820161626
