Q: I have a 2006 Dell Dimension E510 with an Intel Pentium 4 640 I've never overclocked, I clean my computer very often, and now all of a sudden the cpu fan is making this buzzing noise. Heres how it started I used to have a desk with a place to put my computer but I got a new desk and now I just leave my computer on the floor, it's hardwood flooring NOT carpet, but ever since I left it on the floor it's been making this buzzing noise. How do I make it stop, is this a serious problem, could this be because it's on the floor after all I've had it on hardwood flooring while back and it didnt do anything funny but now it's just making this weird buzzing noise.
A: there could be a wire in contact with the fan, or the computer could just be running hot. Im going to assume you cleaned the heatsinks though. it could also the hard drive, but thats more of a clicking sound from it vibrating against it's cage. I doubt it's very serious, but keep an eye on it just to be safe. generally small fans make a lot of noise because of how fast they have to spin to cool the computer. what you could do is have the stock fan replaced by an aftermarket fan, these are typically less noisy. in fact stock fans are the main source of noise in a computer.
