Q: I have 1 Gb DDR in my PC, why is windows XP using the virtual memory if i only use ~ 300MB of my memory? and can I configure this? thanks!
A: You are not seeing the 500 Mb that the system snatches for BIOS and the O/S and so it looks like you are only using 300 Mb when in fact you are more like using 768 Mb and have around 300 Mb left. I hope that you can see that 700 + 300 = 1 Gb, hope that makes sense. No, Windows XP is NOT going to use JUST 300 Mb to operate! Not even! XP needs to have about 750 Mb to operate efficiently. If you are running a bunch of system services you do not need to run, it can add even more tasking to the remaining memory leaving you with very little actual memory left and so the computer goes out and snatches your hard disk and does the virtual memory trick. Go and spend $39 and get another Gig of RAM <===CHEAP! This will solve your problem. PS - Look into all your system services and disable those which do not need to be running. You can find out which ones to disable (and save memory) by consulting Black Vipers Web Site: http://www.blackviper.com/
