Q: I want to take a secondary hdd and install it into my main pc. With the jumper settings on the labels of the hdd, the extra hdd i got doesn't say where to put for "Slave". Just, Master on/slave off....Cable select....and Limits drive capacity to 32mb. where do i put it for slave? *edit, that last jumper setting on my label says 32gbytes. I mistyped.
A: The opposite of "Master on/slave off" is "Slave on/Master off". So, leaving the pins "open" (not jumpered) should make it a slave drive. But, you should just make all your ATA/IDE drives Cable Select (CS) and let their position on the ribbon cable determine their "master/slave" relationship. The end of the ribbon cable is "master". The middle of the cable is "slave". AN ASIDE: The "master/slave" assignment of ATA/IDE drives has been determined to be politically insensitive. We're supposed to use terms like "primary" and "secondary" now.
