Q: I have a pc and (and almost, a.k.a I'm buying it) a mac and only one internet connection. I'd like to have them share the same internet but don't know how. They are only a wall apart, so less that 5 meters. Is this what a wireless router does? My friend has vaguely mentioned this to me before, but I don't know if it's what I need. Thanks in advance.
A: you will need a router, most routers do ethernet, wireless or a combo of both. connect: internet>modem>router>pc's. If you use ethernet cable use straight cable, and if you go wifi , encrypt and password protect your internet from nearby locals users, who don't want to pay.The router you buy should be above specs of your ISP connection so it doesn't become a bottleneck, and slow your connection down. Most routers have a wizard on how to setup and a cd to read. I use a D-Link but it is upto you what you buy. Remember the ISP provider's responsibilities end at the modem. you will also have to configure your Firewall for a local network connection for sharing between the two computers. If you not that savy with computers ask where you buy the router, it isnt that hard.
