Q:
A: Your question is way too general. - I think I should tell you first do what all those above me are saying because my advice is way more complicated.... and most problems are solved by simple measures unlike the ones I have just written below. Is it a new drive that you recently installed. In which case do you have the drivers for it. They usually come on a disk that comes with the drive you bought. Usually those disks will have thier own install program that will take care of installing the proper drivers. If not you'll have to do it yourself using the add new hardware option under control panel. You can tell the add new hardware wizard to look on the disk that came with drive. Unfortunately I'm not sure how it works if you don't have another drive to read the disk with. If you read the instruction manual, it'll usually tell you exactly what to do to make it work and successfully install the drivers. If it's plugged into the computer, it'll open and close no problem regardless. Also if you have the drivers installed already, then look for updates on the manufacturer's websites Also you may want to make sure your drive is plugged in properly. Check inside the computer and make sure the flat, usually grey, cord is plugged in right. Pin 1 on the drive needs to line up with hole 1 on the cord. The cord usually has a little bump that only allows you to plug it in properly. There is also often a red stripe on the cord that indicates hole 1. As for the drive, there is usually some sort of notch or and actual tiny little 1 by pin one. Now also there are two cords that plug into a cd drive. The power cord from the power supply, and the flat grey cord that connects to the motherboard. There is sometimes a third smaller cord that I don't know what it's for, but it's usually small and black and has like 3 holes. It either connects to the mother board or sound card, I think I've seen it connect to both before in different computers. If that's all good, then look at the 6 or 8 little pairs of pins usually in between the grey cord and the power cord. There should be a little jumper on two of those pins. Usually the manufacturer puts it on the CS pins which means cable select. If the grey cord is connecting more then one drive to the mother board then one of those drives must be set as the master drive and the others as the slave drives. You can do this by setting them all to CS which would cause the top most drive on the cable to be the master, and the rest to be slaves, but Usually it's best to have the hard drive be master. MAKE SURE YOU NOTE WHERE THE JUMPERS ARE LOCATED ON THE PINS BEFORE YOU CHANGE THIER POSITION INCASE YOU NEED TO PUT THEM BACK WHERE THEY WERE. IT IS A PAIN IN THE BUTT TO HAVE TO FIGURE IT OUT SO MAKE A NOTE OF IT BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING TO THEM. So if the hard drive is not on the top of the cable, set the hard drive to MS, and all the other drives to SL which means slave drive. If that doesn't work, call customer support, find thier number online, and tell them what your problem is and make sure to tell them what you've done so that they are on the same page. They may tell you to set the jumpers back to thier original positions. If nothing works, you may just have a bad cd drive, and you need to either return it for another or replace it with a new one. It happens from time to time.
