Q: I'm running Windows XP (SP3) and it's taking ages to login and show the desktop. I've heard it could be something to do with the pagefile and defragging. I've run a defrag (using PerfectDisk) and used PageDefrag and its done no good. Any help would be nice. But not overly technical prefebly nothing to do with the BIOS or anything. :D! Thanks.
A: Apart from all the above answers I suggest you get more RAM. If you don't already have more than 1GB it should help. I recently put in an extra 1GB and startup has sped up a lot. Also, google for and get "ccleaner" - stands for "cr*p cleaner" and throws out all the junk files. I just remembered another problem I had where the icons came up one by one and very slow - you have to increase the icon cache in the registry. Will try and find info and will post it asap here. EDIT: Have a read of this or google for "increase icon cache xp" and see if there's an easier way of doing it if you're worried about changing the registry: http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-5164407.html
