Q: I am going to get an XFX nForce 3-way SLI motherboard with a Intel Quad 2.4 ghz processor to upgrade from my piece of crap P35 MSI mobo and Intel Duo 3.0 Ghz processor. The only problem I'm having with these pieces of hardware is that I have no idea on how to over clock the processor. Since I plan to get rid of the P35 and the Duo processor I won't need to know who to OC it (the P35 came with a program but it doesn't work) Now the question is : Can someone give me step by step instructions on how to OC my processor using that motherboard? You can find this board by searching for XFX on www.newegg.com and click on Intel Motherboard (5) on the left side of the screen. It should be the first one. Since this board is pretty popular I am wondering if anyone can give me a link or just step by step instructions on how to OC using this board. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!! p.s. Would it be safe to OC that quad processor to 3.0?
A: These two sites will help in your overclocking: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1198647 http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=441458 And these have some definitions and concepts to help you: http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1804 http://www.overclockers.com/tips120/index06.asp Overclocking mainly relies on your processor and partially on your mobo. You need to check if your mobo supports overclocking first. The processor can be overclocked to the limits of your RAM speed. The best I think is a 1:1 ratio with your FSB:DRAM. A guide of the speeds are there in the aforementioned sites. Overclocking for the CPU is normally done in the BIOS by increasing the FSB. Your final speed is your FSB x Multiplier which is also available in the BIOS. The rest of the guides have sufficient information. Remember to STUDY your manual! Getting an aftermarket cooler will keep temperatures down. Overclocking really makes the heat spike. I overclocked my core 2 duo from 2.3 to 2.8 and it maxes out about 61 degrees C! You can find HSF reviews at www.frostytech.com. I think average prices are $50-55. Also searching "How to overclock quad core" will help. I hope I was helpful ;-). Happy overclocking!
