If the HDD in a ps3 isnt working can u connect an external one [by plugging in the usb] ?

Q: have a 60gb ps3 and it seems like the HDD isnt working so i wanted to plug in an external one but dont know if it would work. or is my only option taking out the one inside the ps3??

A: Take out the one frm inside, and replace it.
