can an external hard drive be used as memory for a computer?

Q: My computer is running at the last portions of its small 100gb hard drive and there is VERY LITTLE memory left. if i buy an external hard drive for 160-250gb could i use that as extra memory and HOW ?????? PLease help!~

A: It will work as additional storage space for programs and files. One way to help what I think is your trouble is once you have hooked up the external, Usually to a USB connection, start transferring your document, video, and picture files to the new drive. Next when you install a new piece of software install it to the new drive. Once you've transfered the files you want, run the "disk cleanup" and "disk defragment" programs and this will free up more space. What I would be tempted to do in your case is to install the new drive as my primary and reload your operating system onto it.
