How does total available graphics memory work?

Q: If a PC has 287MB of total available graphics memory, does that mean that a video card with more than this won't raise your PC's video memory beyond 287MB? I'm actually just considering buying a Pavilion that has the 287MB total available shown in the specs. I was just wondering if this is a cap that can't be raised by adding for instance, a 512MB video card.

A: If you install a new video card with 512 MB of memory then the total video memory is 512Mb. It Looks like you have an on-board video card. On board vidoe memory works like this. If your total amount of ram is 1024Mb then you On board will use 287 of the Ram. Leaving you with amount of Ram to 737Mb Hope This Helps
