The different AGP versions.

Q: I could be asking a stupid question here but bare with me. As far as I know there are many different versions of the AGP graphics cards. I was wondering if you need a certain kind of AGP slot in your computer for each one of the versions or if all versions can use the same AGP slot. I was just wondering because I am looking to buy a new graphics card.

A: You are correct in your assumption that there are several different AGP specifications. 2x, 4x, and 8x. Most modern AGP cards are 4x/8x card in that they will work in both slots, but you have to be diligent in your research to know for sure, as there are 8x only cards. The slot is typically the same size, but the slots will be voltage specific: AGP slot/card support status: Generally... If AGP 1.0 or 2.0 card is running in 2x, 1x mode it will use 3.3v If AGP 2.0 or 3.0 card is running in 4x mode it will use 1.5v If AGP 3.0 card is running in 8x mode it will use 0.8v AGP 1.0 slot supports 1x and 2x at 3.3v AGP 2.0 slot supports 1x and 2x at 3.3v AGP 2.0 slot supports 4x at 1.5v AGP 3.0 slot supports 4x at 1.5v AGP 3.0 slot supports 8x at 0.8 hope this helped......the guys in the forums at guru3d.com are a great source of info......
