Q: Would Phenom be supported by this socket? Or do you need AM2 socket? Would Phenom be supported with this socket or do you need *AM2 plus* socket for that one?
A: Socket AM2 and Socket 940 are totally different as far as pin placement and cpu compatibility. The AM2 socket supports far too may chips to list here. Everything from AM2 Semprons to 6400 dual cores....Phenom procs are supported by the AM2+ socket, which generally means mobos with newer chipsets such as the AMD770/790. The AM2+ will support the same dual core chips as AM2...... Server class chips such as Opteron's mostly use the 940 socket, although some are specific to the AM2 socket. Hope this was helpful.....I have built many systems using Phenom procs, and they have never worked correctly using socket AM2 mobo's......go with an AM2+ board if you are considering a Phenom
