How much ram should i add 1gb or 2gb? details inside qn

Q: i have a 3ghz pc with 512mb ddr ram on as i bought it, i have bought 2 1gb ram add on things and i have 4 slots, 1 taken by 512mb ram already on, and a theoretical max of 4gb ram on my desktop pc (runs on xp sp2). so heres the qn, should i add just one stick to go to 1.5 gig ram, or both to go to 2.5gig of ram as i heard too much can actually slow your pc down? p.s both the new 1gb ones ore identical and are 400mhz, the 512mb is stock as in it came with the pc. so is it best to take out thw 512mb and put one of each 1gigs in coloured slots or just bung all 3 in? thanks for any answers given!

A: What you heard is totally wrong, there's no way of you add more memory and it get slower, only if the new ones are not compatible or have a lower frequence. You should put 2x 1gb and keep your 512mb one on it. There's no problem with it, just make sure they are same brand and same specification, otherwise it might get some compatibility problem, will not get slower, but probably will not detect all them. Sometimes the slot dont recognize it and even if you have 2.5gb as an example, it will only read 2gb... if it happen this 512mb memory is probably a different brand, the most common case when it doesnt detect it completely. But go ahead and plug&play all them :)
