Q: does it matter what type you have sata or IDE or PATA? for external drives
A: It doesnt matter to me, because the cable with power supply I bought was good for either IDE or SATA connector. It's a USB to IDE/SATA converter/connector. And the good part is, not only CD/DVD drives I can connect as External, you can also use it to connect Hard Drives.
