Computer/router/internet help?

Q: I have a computer upstairs which is connected to the internet and i have a computer downstairs that i just got and it isnt connected to the internet, i got a router because i was told i could get the internet on the 2nd computer with a router. I dont know how it works, am i supposed to connect the router to the computer that already has the internet and if so then how does the second computer detect the router? Or am i supposed to connect the router to the computer that doesnt have the internet, and if so how does it detect the internet from the upstairs computer? Please help

A: Router usually has one WAN port that connects to DSL or cable modem. Then it has multiple LAN ports, usually 4 but other models may have 8 or more. Just connect the computers to the LAN ports. But then, you need to configure the router first. Install the router's software on one PC; the one you will use to configure. Follow the recommended procedure in router's manual. You will need to input the same username and password that ISP provider gave you (for the modem) to complete the configuration.
