Q: I currently have the external drive connected to my desktop running WinXP SP3 and had the hd working till last night. i tried removing the hd from the casing and connected it directly to the desktop and it worked...could it be just the casing? i tried placing a differend hd in the case and the comp is not responding to it. any suggestion on getting the case to get running again or any suggestions for a cheap case?
A: Sounds like you've done a good job of troubleshooting it. It sounds like a bad case. If the case also used a power supply of its own, make sure the connections into the drive, power brick, and wall are snug. Try swapping the USB cable and move the cable to another USB port on your desktop. Newegg sells hundreds (literally) of replacement external cases. Just make sure to get one that's the correct size of your drive. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=40000092&Description=external%20case&bop=And&Order=PRICE
