Need help on upgrading ram?

Q: I have a dell dimension 5100 with 512 mb ram and i want to ask if i install more ram will the original 512 still count. (ex: i add a 1 gig and it becomes 1.512 gigs) Are these ram compatible with my computer? A: First of all, you can't use the DDR RAM that's included in the first picture as your computer uses DDR2 RAM. (Differrent number of pins.) You can, therefore, use the RAM that's depicted in the second picture. Take a look at the following site for more detailed information about the RAM that's suitable for your computer. You MUST place RAM in pairs as your motherboard utilises this function. If the memory already on your motherboard is two sticks of RAM, you may leave it in place and use the full 1.5 GBs that it will total. Your motherboard can handle a maximum of 4 GB RAM.
