Is there a way to play music threw an external hard drive, threw aux cable?

Q: for example a hi fi system with aux audio plugin. is there any ways of doing this? im thinking no as the hard drive isn't an actual device to play music off, but then i thought maybe there are ways of using it with maybe something thats plugs into the hard drive (like those ipod accessories that attach onto the speaker cable so you don't have to pull your ipod out to change volume/song) then to the hi fi system. to me it sounds possible, but then i'm thinking that the actual hard drive it self would have to still be a player within it. if there's anything, fairly similar to this question please post a link i want to try and figure this out so i can just use my external hdd to play my music in my room. cheers please don't answer if you don't understand what i'm saying. or you can i dont care. I understand there is no way of playing music threw the hard drive just by simpily plugging a chord from the hdd to the hi fi, I want to know if there is a way to use a device maybe to play the hard drives music on the hi fi. for example, hdd to player to hi fi. I know the cable you are talking about i have several, my question was not, "is there a way to plug an ipod into a aux?" please read properly thank you.

A: The answer is: maybe. I use my PC as the core of my audio system but, as you say, a hard drive is just a storage device. However, there are audio systems that support USB plug-ins and they should accept a hard drive the same way they'll take an i-pod. I've got a DVD recorder with an SD card slot that will play music directly from the card, so the market is moving in that direction. Unfortunately, you won't be able to do it with an older audio system (and in this context that could mean bought yesterday). If you can afford an used old laptop to dedicate to your audio system, it'll address the whole issue in a simple form.
